Math 8 (Period B,C &E) Assignments

Instructor
Mr. Gary Dresser
Term
2019.20
Department
Math
Description

Math 8 (Course 3) is an exciting approach to preparing for Algebra I. The class will teach the basics of Algebra: Exponents, Scientific Notation, Relationships, Functions & Linear Equations; as well as Transformational Geometry and Statistics. We will be using the Big Ideas Course 3 textbook and online supplements. Most of the homework will be offered in an online format and I would like to encourage students to use the online option, but it will not be required. If there is a specific assignment that seems to difficult or lengthy, please make a note on the students homework and sign were you had them stop and we will discuss options in class the next day.

Our job is to connect the State Standards for Mathematical Practice to the Standards for Mathematical Content, Grades 6-8 are organized into Domains: The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Functions, Geometry and Statistics & Probability.  The curriculum will be similar to that in high school, so good organization, effort and consistency will be key ingredients to success in this class.  My goal is to have students leave 8th grade confident of their math skills and ready to succeed in High School mathematics.

After passing this course, students will be ready to take Algebra I.

Go to Google Classroom and open the Agenda (week 3) and notice the assignments for the week.

Do NOT wait until Tuesday, do it as soon as you have looked at your agenda

You are to watch at least one of the lesson videos (either me or Ms. Brady's) before starting the homework.

Homework due dates are NOT intended to be WHEN you work on the assignments, but due by that date. PLEASE work on the assignments evenly throughout the week. DON'T wait until Thursday and work on ALL of them then.

Friday's Quiz will again be on ALEKS, and the 80% requirement WILL be in effect this week and a late penalty for work and the quiz will also be in effect and greater.

Please notice that the Quizizz is NOT Required google classroom assignment. You may work on the Quizizz multiple times (I think I'll set it to four times), and Quizizz should automatically put your latest (last) score in the google assignment. So make sure your last time is your best effort.

LET ME KNOW AHEAD OF TIME IF THERE ARE ANY PROBLEMS OR CONCERNS.

Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday morning: 9:30am - 10:15am

Unfortunately some students are misusing zoom and google meetings so we are going to require that you show your face (just at the start) to verify it is you. And always, you will not get in if your user name does not have both first and last name. Go to the tutoring to learn how to change your name if you are using your parents zoom account. Ask them if you have start your own account for this purpose.

Math 8 Agenda: Week 2

After opening the agenda and making note of the dates (Assignment-6 is due Tuesday & we have a Quiz on Friday), go to Google Classroom and submit this Assignment. This will be your confirmation of receiving this Agenda and taking responsibility of knowing what and when everything is due (I'm not calling on Friday begging you to take the quiz on time). Please submit on or before Tuesday, April 28: 11:15am

Also note that the ALEKS assignment does NOT go away after getting the appropriate (80% or greater) score to allow you to take the Quiz. You do NOT have to continue to take the quiz if you reached the goal.

Please make a first attempt at the ALEKS assignment (review) on or before noon on Thursday, so you have time get help (See Office Hours at the bottom of the Agenda), and can retake up to 7 times to get the prerequisite score (80% or greater).

You need to watch ONE of the videos for each Lesson (10.1 & 10.2), you may choose which video, and yes, you can watch more than one if you need or desire.

Khan Academy and the Quizizz reviews are Extra Practice and NOT required, but they are good resources for help in understanding the current material.

If you need any help, or just want to say "hi", one if not all of us (Ms. Brady, Ms. Moreno & Mr. Dresser) will be available during office hours:
Tuesday & Thursday: 9:30 - 10:15 am

It would be good to work on your math skills for 30 minutes a day, The program may start with an initial diagnostic test that will then place you in the areas that you need to work on. I will be posting, individually your log on information and then I will email your parents to let them know that this is available. My hope is that you do not fall behind in math as we are so close to the end of the school year.

Make sure you write down your USER NAME and password. I cannot access your password and we do not have unlimited accounts: ONE per student

I am available by email, or message me through Google Classroom.
