Algebra 1 (7th & 8th) (Period A & F) Assignments

Instructor
Mr. Gary Dresser
Term
2019.20
Department
Math
Description

Algebra 1 is the start of what most people see as the college preparation classes for mathematics. We will be using the Big Ideas textbook and online supplements. Most of the homework will be offered in an online format and I would like to encourage students to use the online option, but it will not be required. If there is a specific assignment that seems to difficult or lengthy, please make a note on the students homework and sign were you had them stop and we will discuss options in class the next day.

Our job is to connect the State Standards for Mathematical Practice to the Mathematical Content. Higher mathematics (Alg.1 and above) are organized into conceptual categories: Number and Quantity. Algebra,   Functions, Modeling, Geometry and Statistics & Probability. The curriculum will be similar to that in high school, so good organization, effort and consistency will be key ingredients to success in this class.

After passing this course, students will be ready to take High School Geometry.

If there is a problem, let me know IMMEDIATELY

The review assignment will be the Quizizz review (this is assignment-13, this week it is NOT optional), and you may take the review assignment up to 4 times, if you want (there is a zoom meeting available Friday morning 10-11:30 for any questions or help).

Week 3: Agenda Check in (Required)

Go to Google Classroom and open the Agenda (week 3) and notice the assignments for the week.

Once you have looked at your agenda, "Mark as Done" the google classroom assignment (you do not have to attach anything)
Do NOT wait until Tuesday, do it as soon as you have looked at your agenda

You are to watch at least one of the lesson videos (either me, Ms. Brady's or Ms. Moreno's) before starting the homework.

Homework due dates are NOT intended to be WHEN you work on the assignments, but due by that date. PLEASE work on the assignments evenly throughout the week. DON'T wait until Thursday and work on ALL of them then.

Please notice that the Quizizz is REQUIRED this week and the Quiz is on Illuminate on Friday.

The Quizizz will be sent on Tuesday using google classroom assignment. You may work on the Quizizz multiple times (I think I'll set it to three times), and Quizizz should automatically put your latest (last) score in the google assignment. So make sure your last time is your best effort.

Instructions on Illuminate will come out either Thursday night or Friday morning.
You use "my portal" and then "applications" to go to Illuminate. Check into Friday mornings Zoom if you are unsure.

Extra Practice: There are Khan Academy videos and practice available for you and I would love to see you do 1 to 1.5 hours of ALEKS (general work: not on current topics) by Saturday night is possible.

Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday morning: 9:00am - 9:45am
Friday morning: 10am - 11:30am (sorry about last Friday, we were delivering signs)
Monday - Thursday afternoon: 2:30pm - 3:45pm (We are available for 7 hours per week)

Unfortunately some students are misusing zoom and google meetings so we are going to require that you show your face (just at the start) to verify it is you. And always, you will not get in if your user name does not have both first and last name. Go to the tutoring to learn how to change your name if you are using your parents zoom account. Ask them if you have start your own account for this

Quiz on 12.1 & 12.2:  Start any time between 12 pm and 3:30 pm using the ALEKS program  https://www.aleks.com/

*Reminder: you must have an 80% on the ALEKS Lesson ch.12.1 & 12.2 Review before you can start the Quiz
The Lesson DOES NOT go away after you pass with 80% or better.  Do NOT retake the assignment unless you did not get an 80% (7 tries possible).
Contact me through email or Zoom BEFORE 11:30 am on Friday if you were unable to achieve the 80%

Agenda: week 2

After opening the agenda and making note of the dates (Assignment-6 is due Tuesday & we have a Quiz on Friday), go to Google Classroom and submit this Assignment. This will be your confirmation of receiving this Agenda and taking responsibility of knowing what and when everything is due (I'm not calling on Friday begging you to take the quiz on time). Please submit on or before Tuesday, April 28: 11:15am

Also note that the ALEKS assignment does NOT go away after getting the appropriate (80% or greater) score to allow you to take the Quiz. You do NOT have to continue to take the quiz if you reached the goal.

Please make a first attempt at the ALEKS assignment (review) on or before noon on Thursday, so you have time get help (See Office Hours at the bottom of the Agenda), and can retake up to 7 times to get the prerequisite score (80% or greater).

You need to watch ONE of the videos for each Lesson (12.1 & 12.2), you may choose which video, and yes, you can watch more than one if you need or desire.

Khan Academy and the Quizizz reviews are Extra Practice and NOT required, but they are good resources for help in understanding the current material.

If you need any help, or just want to say "hi", one if not all of us (Ms. Brady, Ms. Moreno & Mr. Dresser) will be available during office hours:
Tuesday & Thursday: 9:00 - 9:40 am
Friday: 10:00 - 11:30 am (new modified hours)
Monday through Thursday: 2:30 - 3:30 pm
and you can email me at gdresser@wvusd.k12.ca.us
